Beach Volleyball Training

Beach Volleyball is the fastest growing collegiate sport in the country, with more and more opportunities for athletes to find success in indoor and beach programs as they are two different seasons: Indoor in the fall and Beach in the spring. The advantage of playing beach volleyball is that a player must be able to perform every skill. To be successful at beach volleyball a player must be able to pass, set, hit, serve, and play defense.  It forces the players to develop their weaker skills. It also requires players to cover more of the court on serve receive and on defense and this teaches players to read the hitter and control the ball. Moving in the sand and jumping in the sand is much more difficult than in indoor, so playing beach volleyball can help you develop a stronger jump and make you quicker on defense because you’re under constant resistance in the sand. Learn more on why your athlete should be playing Beach Volleyball here.

There are a number of differences between the indoor and outdoor game that help to improve an athlete’s volleyball IQ. Here are a few of those differences:

  1. Two athletes cover almost the same surface area as the indoor court.

  2. A block touch counts as a touch.

  3. No open hand tips allowed.

  4. Any ball contacted overhead MUST be 100% clean (no spin).

  5. Most junior tournaments do not have referees or coaches, therefore, athletes must learn how to handle more responsibility.

Gear you should have every time you step onto the sand:

  • Sunglasses or Visor/Hat (good, athletic pair that won’t fall off while playing)

  • Sand Socks (prevent foot burns from hot sand)

  • Sunscreen

  • Towel

  • Matching Apparel with Partner
